Why Did My QR Code Stop Working? 7 Causes and Fixes

A QR code that suddenly stopped working is usually one of seven things. How to diagnose it, fix it and prevent it next time.

First, work out which kind of QR code you have

A QR code that worked last month and now does nothing is one of the most frustrating problems a business can have, especially when it's printed on 500 menus or a shop window. The fix depends almost entirely on one question: is your code static or dynamic?

  • Static QR code: the destination (a web address, WiFi details, a phone number) is stored inside the pattern itself. Nothing can switch it off remotely. If it stops working, the cause is the destination or the physical print.
  • Dynamic QR code: the pattern stores a short link owned by the QR provider (something like provider.com/x7Kq2), which then redirects to your real page. The provider controls that redirect, so the provider can stop it.

To check, scan the code with your phone camera and look at the address it previews before you open it. If it shows your own website, it's static. If it shows the QR company's domain with a short random code, it's dynamic.

Cause 1: the dynamic code was deactivated by the provider

This is the most common cause of a code that "suddenly" broke, and the most annoying. Many QR generators let you create a dynamic code for free, but the free period is a trial. When it ends, or when a paid subscription lapses, the provider stops redirecting your code. Scanners land on an error page or an upgrade notice instead of your menu.

How to fix it: you can't edit a printed pattern, so your options are to pay the provider to reactivate the code, or to reprint with a new code. Before you reprint, read the new provider's terms for one specific sentence: what happens to my codes if I stop paying?

(For what it's worth, QRCraft's dynamic codes keep redirecting even if a subscription ends; only editing and creating new codes is limited. Whoever you use, get that answer in writing.)

Cause 2: the page it points to has moved or been deleted

The QR code may be fine, but the web page behind it isn't. Website redesigns, a new online-ordering system, or a renamed PDF can all leave the old address returning a "404 page not found".

How to fix it: open the destination address in a browser. If it's gone, either restore a page at that exact address, or set up a redirect on your website from the old address to the new one. If the code is dynamic, simply change its destination in your QR dashboard.

Cause 3: a link shortener or domain expired

Some people put a shortened link (from a URL shortener) inside a static QR code. If that shortener shuts down, deletes inactive links, or your account lapses, the code breaks. The same happens if the code points to your own domain and the domain registration isn't renewed.

How to fix it: renew the domain or shortener account if you can. For the future, point static codes at a domain you control and keep it on auto-renew.

Cause 4: the print makes the code hard to read

Phones are good at reading QR codes, but they still need a clear pattern. Common print problems:

  • Too small: a rough rule is that the code should be at least 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) wide, and about one tenth of the distance people scan it from. A code on a poster read from 2 metres away needs to be around 20 cm wide.
  • Low contrast: light grey on white, or dark blue on black, can fail. Dark modules on a light background are the safest choice.
  • Inverted colours: light code on a dark background works in some scanner apps and not in others.
  • No margin: QR codes need a blank border (the "quiet zone") around them, ideally four modules wide. Cropping it off or placing the code against busy artwork confuses scanners.
  • Glossy or curved surfaces: glare on laminated menus or bottles can hide part of the code.

How to fix it: test the printed version with two or three different phones, in the actual lighting where people will scan it, before you print the full run.

Cause 5: the logo or design covers too much of the code

QR codes include error correction, which lets them survive some damage. That's what makes a logo in the middle possible. But the levels are limited: roughly 7% of the code can be recovered at level L, 15% at M, 25% at Q and 30% at H. A large logo, heavy styling, or rounded "dots" can push past that limit.

How to fix it: keep the logo small (well under a quarter of the code's area), keep the three corner squares clear, and test every styled version before printing.

Cause 6: physical damage or tampering

Scratches, fading in sunlight, water damage or a sticker placed over part of the code can all stop it scanning. On outdoor signs, also check that nobody has stuck a different QR code on top of yours, a common scam on parking meters and posters.

How to fix it: replace damaged prints, use laminated or outdoor-rated material for anything outside, and check public-facing codes regularly.

Cause 7: the code was flagged as unsafe

If the destination website gets flagged for malware or phishing (sometimes because the site was hacked), phone browsers may show a red warning page instead of opening it. Scanners see that as "the QR code doesn't work".

How to fix it: check your website in Google's Safe Browsing site status tool, clean up the site if needed, and request a review in Google Search Console.

How to avoid it next time

  • Use a static code for anything that will never change (WiFi details, a vCard, a permanent page on your own domain).
  • Use a dynamic code when you need to change the destination later, from a provider that won't switch it off when you stop paying.
  • Point codes at addresses you control and keep your domain on auto-renew.
  • Print large enough, with strong contrast and a clear margin, and test before printing in bulk.

You can create static QR codes free on QRCraft, or make a dynamic code you can edit later.
