vCard QR Codes: Business Cards That Save Straight to Contacts

A vCard QR code saves your details straight into someone's phone. What to include, where to use it and how to print it.

What a vCard QR code is

A vCard QR code stores your contact details (name, phone, email, company, website) in the standard vCard format that phones use for contacts. When someone scans it, their phone offers to save you as a new contact, with every field filled in correctly. No more mistyped email addresses from a business card.

It's a static code, so it works offline and never expires. The trade-off: to change your details, you print a new code.

Where vCard codes work best

  • Printed business cards: a small code on the back next to your details.
  • Conference badges and lanyards: people can save you while you talk.
  • Email signatures and slide decks: the last slide of a talk is a great place for one.
  • Shop counters and service vans: customers save your number for next time.
  • Real estate and trade signs: a buyer or customer saves the agent's or tradesperson's details on the spot.

What to include (and what to leave out)

Every extra field makes the QR pattern denser, and dense codes need to be printed bigger to scan reliably. Include what people actually need:

  • Full name
  • Mobile number (with country code, e.g. +44 or +1)
  • Email
  • Company and job title
  • Website

Leave out long notes and full postal addresses unless they're essential. If you want to share lots of information (portfolio, social links, booking page), put a short web address in the vCard and let that page do the work.

How to create one

  1. Open the vCard QR code generator.
  2. Fill in your details. Double-check the phone number format and email.
  3. Optionally add a logo and colours that match your brand, but keep enough contrast.
  4. Download and place it on your card or signature.
  5. Test: scan it with your own phone and confirm the contact preview looks right before printing.

Printing tips for business cards

  • Size: on a business card, aim for at least 2 cm (0.8 in) square. A dense vCard may need a bit more.
  • Margin: leave clear space around the code; don't let card artwork touch it.
  • Finish: matte finishes scan more reliably than glossy ones under bright light.
  • Label it: a few words like "Scan to save my contact" increase scans because people know what they'll get.

vCard vs. a link to a profile page

A vCard code saves your details directly to the phone, which is the best experience for "remember this person". A URL code to a profile page (like your LinkedIn or a personal website) is better when you want people to browse more and when your details change often. Many people use both: a vCard on the card, and a link in their email signature.
